Gerald Arthur Burns, husband of the late Mary (Weaver) Burns, passed away on February 6 2021 at the Miramichi Regional Hospital at the age of 86. Born in Newcastle, NB he was the son of the late Leonard and Anne (MacDonald) Burns.

Gerald was a retired Federal employee of the Renous Ammunition Depot and CFB Chatham. He was a long time community volunteer serving on several Boards (member of the Newcastle Recreation Council and Executive Member for the Sinclair Rink, Beaubear Credit Union). Gerald was a key contributor to minor sports in the former Town of Newcastle. His involvement in minor basketball and baseball helped to set the foundation for future generations to come. In his youth, Gerald was an excellent basketball player. He captained the 1953 Harkins team, who were the last Miramichi team to capture a NB High School Championship. He was also voted to the tournament all-star team. Gerald was a key member of the Newcastle Recreation Council for a number of years. He umpired in the Miramichi Intermediate Baseball League from 1954-61. In 1961, he was instrumental in organizing the first Little League Baseball Association at McCoomb’s Field in Newcastle along with Pat Chambers, Bunny Wood, and Reverend Roy McLean. He coached Little League from 1961-75. He also served as foreman for the grant to construct Cardinal Baseball Field in 1990. Gerald coached basketball at Harkins and Croft Elementary from 1960-76 and was A NB Canadian Legion Track official from 1956-60. He was inducted into the Miramichi Sports Wall of Fame in 2016.

He is survived by his sons: David (Tammy) of Miramichi, Paul (Lori Ann) of Moncton, Michael of Miramichi; daughter: Jennifer Howe (Bradley) of Miramichi; grandchildren: Gregory Burns (Moncton), William Burns (Halifax), Thomas, Taylor and Ashley Howe of Miramichi; brother: Raymond Burns of Bathurst; sister: Barbara (Bill) Robertson of Moncton, NB.

Besides his parents and wife Mary, he was predeceased by his brothers Leonard (Buddy) and Robert Burns; sisters: Noreen O’Shea, Reta Burns and Eleanor Stinson.

At Gerald’s request there will be no visitation at the funeral home. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a Private Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from Our Lady of Annunciation Roman Catholic Church, Doaktown on Thursday, June 17, 2021 with Father Dan Bastarache officiating.
