Leola Barbara (Mullin) Johnston wife of Donald Johnston passed away suddenly surrounded by family and friends at the Miramichi Regional Hospital on Saturday, January 4, 2020 at the age of 84. Born on September 23, 1935 in Lower Derby, NB, Leola was the daughter of the late Russell and Joyce (Amos) Mullin.
Leola was a retired Registered Nurse. She began her nursing career as a student at the Miramichi School of Nursing in 1953 graduating in 1956. Leola devoted 40 years of her life to the care of others during her career. She was a member of the Retired Nurses Association, UCW at St. James and St. John United Church and a former CGIT leader.
Although small in stature, Leola had the capability to love beyond measure. Her love for her husband of 59 years and two daughters was strongly felt. She adored her grandchildren and enjoyed telling everybody countless stories about them. To the joy of those around her, she shared her love of baking and was famous for her carrot cake. Knitting was a strong passion for Leola and she knit hundreds of dishcloths to share with family and friends. Many homes and Christmas trees are adorned with the many crafts and ornaments that she made over the years and her handiworks have become treasures to enjoy. She spent countless hours doing crossword puzzles and could master even the most difficult ones. Leola especially loved going to church on Sunday mornings and participating in the UCW.
Besides her husband Donald, Leola is survived by two daughters: Kathy Buckley (Kevin) of Douglasfield, Susan Johnston (Jason) of Newcastle; two brothers Harry Mullin (Myrtle) of Newcastle, George Mullin (Marilyn) of Lower Derby; sister in law Dolores Mullin of Newcastle; three granddaughters, Amy Hamilton(Brad) of Newcastle, Sara Buckley Paynter (Kyle) of PEI and Brooklyn McLaughlin of Newcastle; one great granddaughter Mya Hamilton as well as many nieces, nephews, brother and sister in laws.
